WVD celebrated at veterinary campus of SKUAST-K at Shuhama

Srinagar, Apr 25: With the theme of “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health” a mega function on World Veterinary Day -2026 was celebrated on Saturday at Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, SKUAST-Kashmir Shuhama, Alusteng.

 

Director Research, SKUAST-Kashmir Prof. Haroon R Naik, chief guest on the occasion commenced the event by hoisting the World Veterinary Association Flag followed by participation in World Veterinary Day Rally up from Faculty building to main venue at Harmukh Auditorium at Shuhama campus.

 

Prof. Haroon later released the Vet’s Vision Wall Magazine 2026 edition and inspected the student Rangoli corner before proceeding to the main hall accompanied by other officers of the University, Heads of Divisions, Scientists and around 600 students that participated in the event.

 

The presence of various superannuated faculty added grace to the occasion along with other guests invited for the annual event celebrated every last Saturday of the April month worldwide.

 

Saturday’s function marks culmination of two weeks long series of events held under the banner of WVD 2026 celebrations held at FVSc & AH, Shuhama. The various sub events organized prior to today’s function include activities ranging from various Sports competitions (indoor and outdoor) to Literal activities (Debate, Quiz etc) besides the other community outreach programmes like Clinical Camp, Blood Donation camp, Plantation drive and School Outreach as well.

 

The participation and awareness visit of around 200 students from various schools was one of the highlights of this year’s WVD celebrations held at Shuhama, campus.

 

The awardees of these events were also felicitated with certificates and medals distributed during the event. A well drafted Annual Faculty Report on its work and achievements along with the Literary club Magazine named Undefined were also released by the dignitaries on stage.

 

In his address Prof. Haroon threw light on SKUAST-Kashmir’s journey of emergence as the top innovation led Farm University, being well acknowledged both at national and global levels.

 

He impressed upon the scientists, research scholars and students to be proactive in facing the challenge of making this region a Model Bio-Economic State with investment of about Rs. 7200 crores in the form of HADP & JKCIP programs conceived by this University.

 

With regard to theme of the event Prof. Haroon reiterated the different roles played by Veterinarians ranging from Public Health to Food & Environmental Safety and need for conservation and development of local germplasm. 

 

Dr. Naik also requested the local administration of Ganderbal district to establish and develop a world class sports stadium under Khelo India programme at FVSc & AH, Shuhama for the use of students and local community for their all-round development.

 

In his address, Additional DC Ganderbal, Dr. Faheem Bihaki (an alumni of SKUAST-K), the guest of honour, congratulated the Faculty & University for its commendable work and laid stress for rural transformation through development of livestock and allied sectors.

 

Director Education, SKUAST-K, Prof. Mohammad Altaf Bhat, addressed more towards the students from local schools regarding their awareness pertaining to the veterinary profession and its importance to society.

 

Similarly, Dean Students Welfare, SKUAST-Kashmir, Prof. S.A. Gangoo also highlighted the different dimensions of veterinary profession especially in context to emerging technologies like AI, Nanotechnology & Biotechnology, all in place both at profession as well as at faculty level.

 

Prof. Gangoo & Prof. Altaf both congratulated the organizers and faculty on World Veterinary Day and wished best to all participants.

 

Prof. Zahoor Ahmad Pampori, from Division of Veterinary Physiology delivered a keynote lecture on the World Veterinary Day theme.

 

Earlier, Dean, FVSc & AH, Prof. Riaz A. Shah formally welcomed the audience to the World Veterinary Day celebrations. Prof. Riaz A Shah hailed the efforts of all the faculty members, non-teaching staff and students for their support in development initiatives of university and faculty.

 

The event ended with the vote of thanks presented by Prof. Hilal Mudadiq Khan, the Organizing Secretary of the event held at Shuhama while the proceedings of the day were hosted by Dr. Fouzia Shah and Dr. Beenish Qureshi from FVSc & AH, SKUAST-Kashmir, Shuhama.
